October is Canadian Library Month

Throughout October, libraries across Canada celebrate and raise awareness about the impact and significance libraries play in this country. This national event is a chance to highlight the importance of libraries in the pursuit of literacy, knowledge and lifelong learning.

In 2017, the Ontario Library Association has taken the lead in providing a theme “A Visit Will Get You Thinking” as well as bookmarks, posters and graphics. These sharable graphics can be found on DropBox, and can be printed, posted and distributed within libraries and schools throughout the province for free.

The NLLA Annual Poetry Contest is back! This year we are looking for rhyming poems that revolve around the theme “A Visit Will Get You Thinking”. We will have four separate categories for students; Primary (k-3), Elementary (4-6), Intermediate (7-9) and Secondary (10-12) where students have a chance to win a fabulous prize pack. Winners and select poems will be highlighted by the NLLA on their website and social media.

NLLA Canadian Library Month Winner!

The Newfoundland and Labrador Library Association is pleased to announce that Kevin Sharpe (age 14), of Pearce Junior High School in Burin Bay Arm, is the winner of our Canadian Library Month Libraries Inspire contest! Kevin has won a $25 Chapter’s gift card and the library of his choice, Pearce Junior High School’s library, has won $1000 worth of books, generously donated by Library Services Centre!

Kevin’s favorite book is Eragon by Christopher Paolini.

It inspires him because:

“It’s about someone who is just ordinary at the start, and gets thrust into an extraordinary world of adventure. It inspires me since it reminds me that no matter how ordinary things may seem, there is something special in everyone.”

Canadian Library Month: Libraries Inspire Contest

October is Canadian Library Month and the theme for 2014 is “Libraries Inspire”! Celebrate Canadian Library Month with us.

The NLLA along with our sponsor, the Library Services Centre (LSC), are holding a contest where you could win $1000 worth of books for a library in Newfoundland & Labrador!

We want to know how libraries inspire; tell us your favourite book and why it inspires you. If your entry is selected, the school or public library of your choice will win $1000 worth of books from LSC (and there’s a prize for you, too!).

There are two ways to enter:

The winner will be chosen from all the entries received by November 30, 2014.

This morning, NLPL Collections Librarian, Jewel Counsens, was interviewed live on CBC Radio’s St. John’s Morning Show to announce the winners of NLLA’s annual poetry contest for Canadian Library Month.

Ms. Counsens read the winning entries by students Danika Hodder (Mrs. Boyde’s grade 1 class at Eric G. Lambert School, Churchill Falls), Dillon Burden (Ms. Hancock’s grade 2 class at James Cook Memorial School, Cook’s Harbour), Paris Keats (Ms. Butler’s grade 5 class at Centreville Academy in Centreville),  Abigail MacLeod (Mrs. Stapleton’s grade 7 class at Sacred Heart Academy, Marystown) and Nicholas Power (Mrs. Stapleton’s grade 7 class at Sacred Heart Academy, Marystown).

October 21-27 is International Open Access Week!

“Open Access” to information – the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted.

October 31 Happening

How about a little professional development before heading out to see the little ghouls and goblins this Halloween? The NLLA Happenings Committee will be hosting an Education Institute webinar “Serving English as a Second Language Library Users”.

This webinar is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about serving this specific demographic.

The webinar will take place on October 31st from 3:30-4:30pm, and will be held in Room #5017A, on the 5^th floor of the QEII Library, Memorial University.

The session will be given by Cate Carlyle, Librarian and Instructional Resource Assistant for the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Centre Library at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The NLLA wants you!

The NLLA nominating committee is seeking nominations for one officer of the association, the Vice President/President Elect.

• This is a three year position; Vice President for the first year, President the second and Past President in the final year.
• Activities and responsibilities include; planning the NLLA Spring Conference in the first year and learning the ropes so that you can act as the official representative of the Association.

If anyone is interested but would like to ask some questions please get in touch. Nominations will be heard from the floor of the annual general meeting to be held from 10:50am – 11:50 am on May 13, 2013 but will also be accepted via email to me ekalcock@mun.ca in the event that you cannot attend this meeting (please drop me a line either way, it will be useful to know that nobody is interested in doing this sooner rather than later). The election will be held at the annual general meeting, votes will be by secret ballot (special arrangements for those members unable to attend this meeting can be made. Please get in touch if you would like to take advantage of this).

We are also seeking a volunteer or possibly two to serve as coordinators of NLLA’s Canadian Library Month and Freedom to Read week activities for the upcoming year. Again, if more information required, please get in touch.

Our 2012 Poetry Contest for Canadian Library Month!

 October is Canadian Library Month! This year’s theme is “Libraries Connect”.

The NLLA distributed Canadian Library Month posters and bookmarks to schools and public libraries in the province and sponsored a province wide Haiku Poetry Contest. We received over 550 entries from students from kindergarten to grade 12 who composed haikus inspired by the theme” Libraries Connect”. A haiku is a form of traditional Japanese poetry that, when composed in English, typically consists of three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively.
