2016 LTAIG Conference: Achieving Diversity

Join us for a fun and informative day of conversation and networking with your colleagues across the province and the country! As library professionals, we recognize how critical library and information resources, services, and technologies are for people, especially those who may experience language or literacy-related barriers, economic distress; cultural or social isolation; physical barriers, etc. Libraries can, and should, play a crucial role in empowering diverse populations for full participation in a democratic society. Those who work in libraries understand the value of a diverse collection and workforce in achieving this vision. By assembling the perspectives and experiences of multiple diversities—age, gender, ethnicity, physical ability, sexuality, and more—libraries can continue to innovate and improve services and respond to the needs of changing communities.

The key goal of the Diversity Training Initiative is to increase cross-cultural awareness and understanding while promoting the importance of welcoming communities in attracting and retaining immigrants. Explore basic cultural sensitivity concepts; the immigrant experience; the stages of culture shock, stereotypes; discrimination and so on.

11:00: TranStories: Social Justice Work through Libraries and Archives
Dr. Ailsa Craig & Jeannie Bail, Joint project Social Work & Archives and Special Collection
This presentation will provide an overview of the Transgender Archives (TGA), of which selected materials were on display at the Queen Elizabeth II Library during October 2016, and the story of how the collection came to St. John’s. The TGA, founded by Dr. Aaron Devor at the University of Victoria in 2011, is the world’s largest collection of transgender archival materials. The talk will focus on some of the major donations to the collection, the types of materials found in the archives and the importance of finding and preserving trans history and connecting it with contemporary local communities.
11:45: Enabling Access: Assistive Technologies at the QEII Library

As the number of Memorial University students who self-identify as having a disability grows, so, too, does the demand for improved library accessibility. But rather than equate “assistive technology” (AT) exclusively with “users with disabilities,” why not consider the ways that all users can benefit from AT? In this session, we will look at the assistive technology services currently being offered in the QEII Library, as well as our plans to further improve patrons’ access to our resources.

Dancing Documents addresses the myriad of practical and philosophical issues relating to the archiving of the performing arts, specifically dance and other bodily-focused practices, from the archivist/dancer perspective. The roles of choreographer, performer/presenter and archivist are blurred.

About the coordinating of a series of read-ins in support of the public libraries of Newfoundland and Labrador that are possibly facing closure in the wake of the 2016 provincial budget. Local authors who are current members of WANL have shown support for our libraries by reading their works in libraries around the province.

Keynote: Chad Pelley
Chad Pelley’s fiction has been recognized with more than 10 awards. He is also a songwriter and photographer from St. John’s. His debut novel, Away from Everywhere, was a Coles bestseller, and a film adaptation is underway. His second novel, Every Little Thing, was released in March, 2013 and CBC Canada Reads winner, Lisa Moore, called it “Stylistically fresh, taut with emotional torques and charges,” and “Can’t-put-it-down compelling.”
Tales from the Archive: Larry Dohey, Manager of Collections and Special Projects, The Rooms
Renowned Archivist, Larry Dohey, will regale the conference with “Tales from the Archive”. With his unique perspective on St. John’s he is able to speak to changes he has seen in the city and beyond. Check out his Archival Moments blog.
NLLA General Meeting
The general meeting is an important way that the membership participates. Library Technicians and Assistants need to make their voices heard.

Marie’s positive outlook and determination to speak out in the best interest of Canadian libraries coast to coast is a trademark of her period in office as CLA President. Her presidential theme is “Building Bridges to the Future: Colleagues, Collaboration and Consultation Will Get you There”.
Archive Afternoon: A Field Trip to the Maritime History Archive
Located in the Henrietta Harvey Mathematics building on the Memorial University campus, a short walk from the conference venue. Enjoy a cool, interactive activity planned to showcase the collection and the great work being done by archive staff.
What Makes an Award Winning Library? Edmonton Public Library Staff (Skype Presentation)
“For the last 101 years, the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) has been much more than a place to borrow books. It is a place that galvanizes communities, connects people and expands minds.” The Edmonton Public Library was awarded the John Cotton Dana (JCD) Library Public Relations Award. Considered the most prestigious in its field, the award recognizes and honours outstanding achievement in library marketing and public relations. It is presented by the American Library Association (ALA) and includes a $5,000 development grant to each of its recipients. EPL was one of five winning North American libraries, and the only Canadian recipient, announced at the ALA’s mid-Winter meeting on January 8. Staff from Edmonton Public Library will be Skyping in.
